I pray almost daily, “Lord, purify my heart.” The Lord is in on it, but we have to be a part of the purification process too! James 4:8 says, “Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts.” When we receive Jesus as Lord and Savior, we are made holy. We are holy because He is holy. 1 Corinthians 1:30 says, “It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.” So the Lord made us holy, but believers in Christ must purify ourselves? In this world, we are still tempted by sin. Sometimes, we will take Satan’s bait and feel guilty when we do something to sin against the Lord. Don’t fall into condemnation and hide from the Lord. Go to Him in repentance. Admit your sin to the Lord and let him know you are sorry, with intentions not to do it again. The purification of our hearts is an every day process that we are in with the Holy Spirit. If you are a Christian, you have the Holy Spirit to help you to please God.
To purify your heart, you need to repent of any sin. Pray and ask for forgiveness for anything you have done, said or thought that was against God. Sometimes, we have hidden sin that we are not aware of. Ask the Holy Spirit to convict you. To show you what may be inside of you that is not pleasing to Him.
Read your Bible. To know what is sinful, how to please the Lord and what His will is, you need to know what the Bible says. Ephesians 5:10 instructs us to, “find out what pleases the Lord.” The more you know what the Word of God says, the harder it will be for you to be deceived by the teachings the enemy has out there. Because he will always try to pervert the Word of God with diluted versions of the Gospel.
Worship the Lord! Praise Him by acknowledging out loud who He is and the good things He has done. Put on some worship music and sing along to it. Or put on worship instrumentals and sing your own praises to Him. Praising God brings His presence into your life and changes your heart.
Forgive others when they do you wrong. Don’t let anger, bitterness, resentment, hate and unforgiveness into your heart. As soon as you start to think bad thoughts, recognize that they are there and change your thought pattern. Replace these bad thoughts with loving, kind, compassionate, holy, good truths. Philippians 4:8 says, ” whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things,” and 2 Corinthians 10:5 says, “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” So you can make the thoughts in your mind obedient to the Word of God! You don’t have to think negative, sinful thoughts! You can choose good thoughts.
If you want to please God, keep your heart pure. Seek to purify your heart, with the Lord’s help! It takes effort and practice, but is worth it all to be a friend of God. – “ Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” – Psalm 51:10: A prayer prayed by David, who was a friend of God.
